The Catalog of Reminiscence

The Invitation for Cycling by Mr.Gami

Part 54: Wolber in 1978

Here is the catalog of Wolber which was a French tire maker in 1978.
The type of 700CWO (700C clincher) had begun increasing in those days. And tubular tire had become the main type for road-racing bicycle. Most of products in this catalog were also tubular.
As for tubular tire of those days, Italian brand Crement was the highest model. The price of cotton cord model Critrium was 9,000 yen, and cotton cord model Criterium Seta was 12,000 yen. I could not buy such an expensive tire.
In comparison with Crement, the price of Wolber was from 3,000 to 4,000 yen, had good quality and high function. I had used Wolber regularly.

And one more thing I have to refer to, is "650* 35B Super Randonneur" which was a typical model for high grade Randonneur bicycle. It was the lightweight, low rolling resistance model. There must have been a number of cyclists who had used it. I also had used this model for my first custom randonneur bicycle. However, it was unsuitable for Off-road touring. Therefore I lost an occasion for using this tire.

The catalog was offered by Mr. K. H.

The front cover is very simple.

The catalog explained there were four types of tubular tire in the lineup.

1. Round Shaped Vulcanized
2. Flat Vulcanized
3. Mixed
4. Handmaid

You can read about the detail of each model in the catalog. I think type 1 and 2 were mass-produced in the factory. The interesting thing is that type 2 was suitable for the exportation because the shape of it was flat, easy to transfer and storage.
In this page, the left side is type 1 and the right side is type 2. I often used INTERNATIONAL and CLUB STRADA.

The products of all four types were introduced in this page. The model I had used is only SPECIAL COURSE. I checked about the prices with Cycle Sports magazine special number "All Catalog 78/ 79".

Route Renforce: 3,500 yen
Tourist Renforce: 3,600 yen
Junior Butyl: 3,500 yen
Club Strada: 3,600 yen
International: 3,400 yen
Team Corsa: 3,500 yen
Cross: 4,500 yen
Training Cross: 3,800 yen
Cross Super: 5,000 yen
Special Course: 3,400 yen
Reader: 3,500 yen
Neo Pro: 6,000 yen
Competition: 4,000 yen

Rim cement, world's first tubeless type tubular tire LIBERTY, and its repair kit were introduced in this page. As for LIBERTY, we didn't need to take an ordinary repairing procedure (cut the thread, pull the tube out of tire, repaired it, and sewed again).

These were the WO tires other than tubular tire.
W20 was one of lightweight high pressure tire which was announced in those days. It was recommended to use together with 20mm width WO pipe-narrow rim of Mavic or Super Champion. It was pre-model of present clincher tire. In Japan, several tires such as Mitsuboshi Trim-line, Inoue Road-light, National Extra; and the rims such as Araya 20A, and Ukai 16A were produced at the same time.
The fourth model SUPER RANDONNEUR was sold for a long period. It was a typical tire for high grade randonneur bicycle of those days. As you can recognize from the tread pattern, the tire was produced for riding at paved road.

This page showed the handling base in the world.

Finally, I show a page from the catalog of French version. The illustration must be familiar to a number of cyclists, because it was often printed in New Cycling magazine of those days as an advertisement.
