Part 113: TOEI in 1960s

I would like to introduce the general catalogue of TOEI in 1960s on the part 113. The reason I wrote as 1960’s is that I’m not sure about the year of publication. However, I found the address 9 Toyozumi cho Daito ward on the back cover (Table 4). TOEI moved to Machiya Arakawa ward on 1966 by the constructive eviction for the metropolitan expressway route 1. Therefore this catalogue had to be issued at least before it.

TOEI was established on 1955 by Umeji Uchiho who was the factory manager of Marubeni. It was specialized manufacturer which made bicycle frame and finished bicycle. It was established at Ueno ward Tokyo, had moved to Machiya Arakwa ward Tokyo, Urawa city Saitama prefecture, then finally settled at Kawaguchi city Saitama prefecture. The workshop has been accepting orders which is mainly touring bicycle for 65 years. The delivery date had extended 2-3 years on several years ago. But now the work shop can deliver by 3-6 months.
There must be lots of people who made image of classical randonneur bicycle from the brand name of TOEI. But cyclists who intend to compose touring bicycle with present parts increase. TOEI has a good sense a bicycle with the careful craft, precision, quality, taste.

The standard price on the catalogue is from 28,000 yen for lady model all the way up to 75,000 yen for Speed-Master. The starting salary for a university graduates were 19,000 yen on 1964 which the Tokyo Olympic was held. It was one tenth of a present salary. If I calculate the prices based on present salary, those are 290,000-790,000 yen. Although function and quality of the parts are out of comparison with present parts, those are close to present prices of high grade sport bicycle. Of course there were few cyclists who could spend such lots of money even if it is a high grade sport bicycle. I show each page below. The letters in the catalog might be too small. So I prepared E-book. You can turn each page as real catalog, and zoom it. URL is below. Note: advertisement which doesn't relate to the catalog would appear because I use free service.

This catalogue was scanned the original of those days, was offered by the reader who got it in his youth day. I didn’t dare retouch it. Because I can image from the yellowish page and the writing that the reader had to keep it preciously until now.
