The Invitation for Cycling by Mr.Gami

Part 41: Peugeot in 1974

Here is the catalog of Peugeot in 1974.
Peugeot was imported in small quantities till then. Yamaha motor made a contract about the official import agent with Cycles Peugeot and began to import Peugeot bicycle officially. Five types of road-racing bicycle, six types of touring bicycle, three types of mini-bicycle, and one lady bicycle were sold in Japan. All of them were truly French style.
About the Peugeot, Mr. Zen explained it in detail. I recommend you to visit his website.
The catalog was offered by Mr. F. K.

These are the front cover and the back cover. The photo image is very feminine.

The frame and mechanism of the highest grade road-racing bicycle Super PX10 were introduced in this page.
Back in those days, French parts makers were still brisk. Peugeot bicycle which was equipped with French parts had won General Classification with Bernard Thevenet in 1975 Tour de France. The athlete who put on the maillot jaune (yellow jersey) was Thevenet.

Five types of road racing bicycle such as Super PX10, PX10E, PR10, PA10E, and J10 were introduced in this page.
I had checked about the prices with New cycling magazine of those days. Super PX10 was 250,000 yen; PX10E was 110,000 yen; PR10 was 69,000 yen; PA10E was 56,000 yen; and J10 was 33,000 yen. All of the models were equipped with the parts which were familiar to senior cyclists such as Stronglight chain-wheel, Simplex derailleur, Mafac brake.
Frame of superior model was composed of Reynolds 531 Double-butted tube set and black Nervex professional lugs.

My younger brother, who was a student of junior high school in those days, was influenced by my Katakura Silk, had bought J10 as a first sports bicycle and went to mountain pass with me.

The young models were full of 70's atmosphere.
Here are general cycling bicycles. UE8 and Mixt type UE18 were fast-run models which were equipped with an external 10-speed derailleur and 27 * 1-1/4 (not 700C) wheels. PX50, PE41B, PL40, and J50 were 26 inch models. PL40 was an external 3-speed model. It means that rear sprockets were only three. In comparison with present 10-speed bicycle it's very nostalgic.

Here is mini model. NS40 was an external 4-speed model. PNS22 and NS22 were single- speed models. PNS22 was a folding bicycle. NS40 was a material of Mr. Gaku Miyanofs cartoon "Aoba bicycle shop at Namikibashi Street". It was truly French style. Even now, it looks elegant.

The last is fast-run bicycle for lady and the specification of the models.
