Part 26: Nitto Handle Works in 1980

Here is the catalog of Nitto in 1980. Nowadays, we can get only thin, cheap catalogs. But the catalog of those days was bound neatly, massive.
Though Nitto was not a big company, it has built a cozy, independent booth in the international bicycle exhibition. Nitto has been doing their best as a specialized maker which focus on handlebar. A number of veteran cyclists must have used Universiade 105 or Mod 55 or Peal.
The camping carrier Campy has been one of popular product which was trusted by those who have a long distance cycling trip.
Even now, the company produces the drop-handlebar for the STI lever and various holders, high-quality bottle cages. Nitto is one of maker which I've supported.

Here is the front cover and the back cover. The cover is simple, has good design which can be recognized as Nitto in a glance.

These were handlebars for road racing bicycle and touring bicycle.
Including the model which has engraved Earth mark, I had used the model 105 a lot.
As for the Mod 55, I also loved its engraving which had luxurious feeling and bending shape. I use it for my two touring bicycles now.
As for the handlebar for Randnneur, model 132 had been used for a number of mass-production bicycles and custom bicycles.

These were handlebars and stems for Keirin racing bicycle. Those products were used for Keirin race as authorized parts even now.

These were the drop-handlebars and the other handlebars. The reach and the drop of Olympiade 114 and 115 were 5 mm bigger than Universiade 104 and 105.
All-rounder model 211 and 212 were often used for pass-hunter bicycle. I used to use narrow width model 212 when I ride a bicycle in narrow mountain pass.

Promenade was a model for riding around city as its name was showing. The combination of this handlebar and the opposite brake lever of Yoshigai was an ordinary style in those days. Crystem was a Cinelli Record type. It was sold as a set with Mod.155 or Mod.165 of 26mm diameter in the beginning of sale.

Pearl was a high grade stem, had been used for both touring bicycle and racing bicycle. I've used it with the combination of Mod 55 until now. As for the Pearl stem, there was a genuine weight saving set which was composed of an aluminum wedge, an aluminum wedge bolt, and an aluminum fixing bolt for a clamp.

Technomic and Young were often used for mass-production sports bicycle. Postem was made of steel, was used for general bicycle.

Campee is a long life product. Through a number of model change, it has been produced until now. Nowadays the model for MTB also has been produced. Campee is a popular model as a carrier with side frame. As for the front carrier, a model which has round shape of the top has been sold now.
As for the model BMX, it had been used for the BMX of Kuwahara which appeared in the movie ET. It was in boom for awhile. How about now?

The model in the top photo was named "high grade handlebar for gentleman". It is a model for rod type brake, has been used from the past. The bicycles of Japanese police are equipped with it even now. I'm wondering how a police man chases MTB type bicycle of a robber in a city with such a classic style bicycle.
The bicycle stand in the catalog had been used in bicycle pro-shop. LP was a roof carrier which was made in Italy. Was Nitto a sole import agent?

I wish Nitto a future prosperity. And I want Nitto to produce a lightweight drop-handlebar and a stem which can compete with Deda and ITM.
