The Catalog of Reminiscence

The Invitation for Cycling by Mr.Gami

Part 69: JOTO TOOl in 1965

Here is the catalog of Joto tool in 1965. I'm not sure whether or not it has a connection to Joto Ringyo which is known as an official import agent of Fausto COPPI in Japan. Joto tool itself has been at Higashinari ward Osaka city as well as Joto Ringyo.

The contents of the catalog were divided into three parts such as sports bicycle tool, general bicycle tool, and import tool "VAR". Even now, I can see some of them in the city. And I myself have several tools which were shown in the catalog. There must be a number of cyclists who have a tire lever, all-round wrench, and "VAR" mobile chain cutter.

General bicycle tools which were used at ordinary bicycle shop might be not familiar to most of cyclists. I had often used those tools when I worked at bicycle shop as a part-time worker. Therefore such tools call back memories of those days. Cyclists who always precisely take maintenance of a sports bicycle might think that some of tools are used roughly. However, such usage methods were needed for maintenance of general bicycle.

General bicycle tools which I had used in past were Hozan brands. Therefore I supposed bicycle tools of JOTO must have been taken over to Hozan. But it's merely my presumption. If you know the detail, please send me a mail.

The catalog was made 50 years ago, and papers already deteriorated. I tried to improve the images after the copy. I'm very sorry if there still be a bad part.

The catalog was offered by Mr. N. M.

This is the front cover. I could feel an atmosphere of 1960s from the trade mark of JTO.

This is the table of contents.

Sports bicycle tools were introduced from here.

The mobile tool kit was shown in this page. Back in those days, this kind of tool kit which combined several tools had been sold normally at bicycle shop. However, the flat spanner in A kit was actually hard to use. Therefore we used to buy 8-9 or 10-12 mm spanner. Nowadays, there are a lot of compact and handy tools. Therefore we don't need to use this kind of tool kit.

There was a flat spanner which was used for locknuts of front and rear wheel in the B kit. However, most of present sports bicycle has quick release hub. Therefore we don't need this kind of spanner anymore.

I still have chain cutter and nipple wrench of A kit, and tire levers of B kit in my tool box.

This is the lineup of single item. Flat spanner #1000 and #1020 were also printed in the parts catalog book "Tomoda World Parts 76". #1020 was a so-called Keirin tool (Keirin means track-racing of Japan).

#1110 pedal spanner was similar to a Kyokuto tool and #1060 was same as old tool of Hozan.

#1130 was so-called hub spanner and #1140 was a pliers-type chain cutter.
The catalog explained that the remover for multi sprockets freewheel could be used for Sankosya, Cyclo (France), and 888 (Suntour). I could feel the times from the explanation. Moreover, the word "flash-type freewheel" is almost obsolete word now.
In the old cycling manual, there was the explanation about "the boss-type freewheel" and "the flash-type freewheel".

Sprocket remover is used even now. But we don't need the sprocket vice anymore because of present cassette freewheel.

The catalog was explaining about the crank remover for TA, Campagnolo, and Sugino Mighty.

General bicycle tools were introduced from this page. All tools call back memories of those days, because I had worked at a bicycle shop in the city as a part-time worker.

#2010 A type head remover was general tool for a locknut of head set.
#2030 nipper was a spoke cutter.
#2080 was a tool which made screw thread to fork column.

#2090 was used to exchange tire tubes of general bicycle without taking off a wheel from the frame. You put it between chain stays and screw the handle so that frame ends were spread.

#2050 was a tool which make a bulb hole to BE tire. It looks like a ticket puncher which was used before automatic ticket gate appeared. Nowadays, BE tire is used only for utility bicycle or rear-car. But in the past, kids bicycle was usually equipped with a rod brake and BE tires.

Note: A rear car

Aside from the reamer and the tap, what's #2150? I already forgot.

#2240 was used to rotate a locknut of chain puller which was attached on frame end of general bicycle.
#2250 was a tool which improved a dent of chain case. You open a lid of a freewheel side of the chain case, and insert this tool in the chain case, then used the roller of tip to improve a dent from inside.

#2280 was a very heavy tool. It was used for pulling a rusty stem out of a head tube. General bicycles were usually put outside. Therefore rust happen inside of a head tube easily. In that case, you set the down side of this tool to a locknut of head set, and hook the upper side to a stem, then pull up a stem by rotating the handle of the tool.

I hadn't used #2340. It might be related to the cotter-pin.

#2360 was used for cutting a tire tube.

This is the general tool kit for school, company, government office, and so on. I suppose this kit was used for "technical and homemaking course" in a primary school.

These are the ordinary tools. The socket wrench was suitable size for the locknut of bicycle.

By the way, I have a Toyota genuine spanner set. It must have been made around 1960s. Each spanner is strong, can be used even now.

These are the ordinary tools, too.

These are the ordinary tools, too.

#3620 point spanner and #3630 point rasp were used for a typical distributor of ignition system of motorcycle and car. Nowadays, electronic ignition system took the place of mechanical ignition system.

JOTO had sold French tool "VAR" which was famous as bicycle tool. Even now, these tools have been used at bicycle shops.
I still have #4010 mobile chain cutter. However, there is no occasion to use it recently.
#4040 freewheel cap remover could be used for adjustment of old BB cup.

This is the back cover.

Did you enjoy with this catalog? Nowadays, we quit using some parts of them anymore; however, we have been using the others yet. You may see a real one at a shop.
