The Catalog of Reminiscence

The Invitation for Cycling by Mr.Gami

Part 57: Bridgestone Eurasia in 1977

Eurasia had appeared in 1976. It was announced as an inferior model of Diamond which was a high class model of Bridgestone. The front triangle of the frame was made of Cr-Mo, and the front fork was made of high-tension steel.
There were a lot of optional parts such as carrier (front and rear), flashlight, bag, bottle, brake lever pads, toe clips and straps. Eurasia was sold as "System-sports bicycle". Since then, Eurasia went through a number of model changes or added new model in lineup.
Eurasia had made a great epoch of sports bicycle with other mass-production bicycle in same class, and had fascinated young people who were interesting in sports bicycle. I used to come across Eurasia bicycle on the road or at youth hostel when I was on the cycling in those days.

Here are models in 1977. Eurasia was announced as touring and sportif model at first. Then road-racing model was added in this year. Three kinds of model were introduced in this catalog. The Grand series didn't appeared in this catalog yet.

The catalog was offered by Mr. I. K.

This is the front cover.
There are side photos of the touring model, the sportif, road-racing model, and a close-up photo of seat lug. The Italian cut lug and sticker of Cr-Mo proudly appeared in the photo.
Nowadays, Most of bicycle frames are made of carbon and aluminum. Therefore present bicycle maker describes a thing of Cr-Mo as steel. However, back in those days, there was only steel for bicycle frame. So Cr-Mo was a brilliant word to boys who began to interest in bicycle. Here is large image.

As for touring model, sportif, and road-racing model, the catalog explained the detail of the specification and sales point.
The shape of straight frame end looks like Rene Herse. Though, the crank of the road-racing model was Sakae Apex, the catalog wrote as "Campagnolo type".
Back in those days, BS basically didn't write the company name of parts maker on the specification chart. Here is large image.

This was the line-up of "system" parts. There were still few kinds of bag. The bag which had white stripe on blue base was designed by Mr. Shinichi Toriyama, to compete with a lightweight nylon bag which began to be imported from USA in those days.
As for the aluminum bottle which is in left side, there have been a lot of cyclists who look for it even now.
Note; Mr. Toriyama was the one who brought a bicycle of Rene Herse to Japan and introduced it for the first time. Here is large image.

As I said, the small parts which were used for Eurasia seem to be affected by Rene Herse and Japanese high grade custom bicycle. The producer must have been an ardent cyclist.

There were a number of cyclists who began cycling with Eurasia, and have gone cycling continuously. And some people had restored Eurasia recently, and ride again. There must have been a lot of people who have a brilliant recollection with Eurasia.
