The Catalog of Reminiscence

The Invitation for Cycling by Mr.Gami

Part 86: Wander Vogel (Jyoto) in 1964

Here is the catalog of Wander Vogel in 1964.
Wander Vogel was a brand of sports bicycle which had been sold by Joto Ringyo at Osaka. Various models such as road-racing model and lady model were on the lineup.
The highest grade road-racing model "Tour of Japan" went through a number of model changes and had been sold until early 90s.

This is the front cover. You must be a veteran if you feel nostalgia from this head badge.

Tour of Japan was the highest grade road-racing model of Wander Vogel series. It was composed of Cr-Mo tubes and the imported parts such as Campagnolo, TA, Normandy, GB and Weinmann.
The price was twice of a monthly salary for new college graduates of those days. It must be 450,000 yen at present value.

The catalog introduced the trait of "Wander Vogel" and "Sportsman deluxe". The copy "refined" was nostalgic. "Sportsman deluxe" was so-called clubman model. It was equipped with 26*1-1/4 wheel and the fender of pine needle stay. And there was no carrier.

"Mosquito-seven" and "Mosquito" were the middle grade models which was composed of high-tension steel frame. Both of them were 10-speed models. The derailleur was Campagnolo Sportsman.
Both chain-wheels were the close ratio. However, number of teeth were standard of those days.

These are a camping model Escargot and short trip model Randonneur II. Those models were equipped with many imported parts, must have been high grade models of those days.

These are Randonneur I and Randonneur Junior. Both models were equipped with domestic parts, and the frames must have been made of general steel.
However, the prices were more than a monthly salary of new college graduates. Therefore I think those who could buy these models were limited.

These models were so-called promenade.
The catalog was explained that "Gold is prepared for middle age and old age". However, the word "old age" must be "senior" in present word.
Sportsman Standard was a three-speed model and if you had paid the extra money you would have been able to get a four-speed model.
The saddle was a terry type.
Similar models of the other mass-production maker had been sold in the market in those days, too. But these models seemed to be superior to the others.

Tourist was the lowest model in the lineup of Wander Vogel. Both were front single, three-speed models. The size of Lady was 18 inch (460 mm).
The catalog was saying that "10 or 12 years old kids can ride it". However, ordinary family must have been not able to buy such an expensive bicycle for their kids.

If you look at the catalog closely, you would notice how expensive a bicycle of those days was. Bicycle was still precious by the time I was a kid. People used to check their bicycle at a bicycle shop once a year, and then tried to use it as long as possible.
Nowadays, we can see a lot of cheap city bicycle which can buy for less than 10,000 yen at shopping center, and such bicycles are thrown away easily. I often wonder if it's right way even if a value feeling had changed.
