The Catalog of Reminiscence

The Invitation for Cycling by Mr.Gami

Part 33: Tange industries in 1986

Here is the catalog of Tange in 1986. Back in those days, aluminum frame came to be seen at the market, and Bridgestone announced aluminum frame model Radac in this year.
This catalog also introduced the aluminum tube set LFR 6061 in the beginning. However, the diameter of it was only a bit bigger than a steel tube, was not as big as present mega-tube. Therefore the main products in this catalog were steel.

I put large photos so that you can see the detail of tube data. The catalog was written in English because it was made for foreign country. The catalog was very thick, so I omitted standard models.

These are front and back cover. The design is very simple.

This is the table of contents.

The catalog introduced the aluminum tube set LFR 6061. The bottom right was the comparison table with No. 2 Cr-Mo steel. It compared fatigue strength, tensile strength, elongation rate, and weight. The weight ratio in the data was approximately 0.9, not so much different.

The catalog introduced the front fork LFR. The outside of the column was made of Cr-Mo steel tube. Moreover, the reinforced inner tube of Cr-Mo steel was combined inside of the column. It means that the fork was still on transition period.

Cr-Mo steel tube sets which were popular in those days were introduced from here. Those tube sets must be familiar to veteran cyclists. In my collection, there are two bicycles which are made of No.1 and one bicycle which is made of No.2.

The double butted tube set Infinity was a type which had smooth thickness change. Mangaloy had different composition. The percentage of the manganese content was higher than others.

The catalog was referring to "the frame order system". I guess that it means Tange had accepted an order of tube size from frame maker and frame builder.

Prestige was the highest grade Cr-Mo steel tube set of those days. Even now, you can order by Panasonic POS.
The comparison table showed the tensile strength and the surface hardness were superior to the other set, and moreover the elongation rate was same.

The catalog explained about the order system of Infinity, 900, 1000, and Mangaloy.
As for Infinity, the test results of the tensile stress and compression stress were shown.

The catalog explained about the tube cut and the fork end. The names of fork end were TR, TL, SF, TS, SFR, and TF.
I supposed that fork end of Shimano must have been made by Tange as OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer).

These lug sets were used widely by mass-production maker and frame builder as the so-called Champion lug.

This was the order system of front fork. Customer could select the sizes of each part, the material, the fork end and the fork crown. There were a lot of crown designs which were similar to something.

These were the finished products of front fork. Those were sold at bicycle shop. 130 was called "Colnago type" and 124 was called "Cinelli type".

Several kinds of small parts for frame work were introduced through four pages from here. These parts must have been used widely by mass-production maker and frame builder, too.
