The Invitation for Cycling by Mr.Gami

Part 74: Bridgestone Eurasia in 1978

Eurasia had appeared in 1976. It was announced as an inferior model of Diamond which was a high class model of Bridgestone. The front triangle of the frame was made of Cr-Mo, and front fork was made of high-tension steel.
There were a lot of optional parts such as carrier (front and rear), flashlight, bag, bottle, brake lever pads, toe clips and straps. Eurasia was sold as "System-sports bicycle". Since then, Eurasia went through a number of model changes or added new model in the lineup.
Eurasia had made a great epoch of sports bicycle with other mass-production bicycle in same class, and had fascinated young people who were interesting in sports bicycle. I used to come across Eurasia bicycle on the road or at youth hostel when I was on the cycling in those days.

At here, I introduce the models in 1978. The fast riding and the Lady were added to the lineup in this year. As for the chain wheel, you could change the outer ring as well as the inner ring. The name of Bridgestone stamped on the clanks (It was made by Sugino).

The catalog was offered by Mr. Y. U.

This is the front cover. It was newer design that a cyclist was running fast. It is nostalgic because of the arc-en-ciel jersey of yellow color and the racer cap.
The catalog was explaining about the trait of the models in this year through two pages. The size of BS original chain-wheel was PCD 110 mm; it was the standard of Mighty-tour in those days and the standard of the present compact crank.

There was a catchphrase "the maniac (professional) works in detail" on the right upper side. Then the other catchphrases "the rear outer hanger of Rene Herse type", "the small bell of Sonnet type" followed it. I was wondering how many people could understand those words. However, the word "type" used to cause an image of luxury parts to people.

By the way, the catalog was using the word "mania" proudly. Japanese people used to admire this word in those days.

The introduction about the lineup began from here. The catalog explained about the touring model in this page. There's not much difference with a previous model. The dynamo became small.

Here is sportif model. There's not much difference with a previous model, too.

Fast-riding model had appeared in this year. This model was similar to road-racing model rather than sportif model. It was equipped with 700*28C tires. The combination of front gears was 52T* 42T, a little wide ratio.

There were stickers of Arc-En-Ciel stripes on the seat tube. And the sticker which was same as the head mark was put between the stripes. It must have been mimicking Italian road-racing bicycle of those days.

This is the road-racing model which appeared in the previous year. Only this model had a chain-wheel of Sakae racing type. PCD was 144 mm.
The catalog described it as "Campagnolo type".
This model had a taste of Italian racing bicycle because of the stickers which were same as fast-riding model.

The lady model had appeared in this year. The frame was mixte type. It was equipped with the center-pull rear brake for woman, all-rounder bar, and Gauthier saddle.

Here were system parts. Outer chain ring, tubular tire, French Velox rim cement was added newly. The nylon front bag FB-12 was very usable as an optional bag which was made by mass-production maker of those days, because of the design and the function.

As I said, the small parts which were used for Eurasia seem to be affected by Rene Herse and Japanese high grade custom bicycle. The producer must have been an ardent cyclist.

There were a number of cyclists who began cycling with Eurasia, and have gone cycling continuously. And some people had restored Eurasia recently, and ride again. There must have been a lot of people who have a brilliant recollection with Eurasia.
