The Invitation for Cycling by Mr.Gami

Part 94: Zeus in 1977

This is the catalog of Zeus in 1977. Company name is Zeus industrial S. A; the company was established in 1926. There is the salutation of 50th anniversary on the first page of the catalog.

Those who belong to my generation tend to think that parts of Zeus must have been copy of Campagnolo. Design of several parts such as derailleur, hub, and seat post are almost same as Campagnolo. The others are similar, too.
Anyway we could say it was a general bicycle parts maker because there were saddle, inflator, wear, bag, and tool set in the lineup.

The catalog is A4, 44 pages. I got this catalog from Mr. H. S. who lives in Mie prefecture.

He had found an advertisement of Zeus on the New cycling magazine by chance, sent two letters in English and Japanes to Zeus directly, to get this catalog.

I appreciate to Mr. H. S.

I displayed the catalog every two pages below. I prepared E-book also because the images of the catalog are too small to read the explanation. Some advertisement which does not relate to my website would appear on the E-book because I used free program. But you can turn the pages like a real book, and enlarge each page. URL is below.

E-Book version of the catalog

Left: Front cover, Right: Back cover

Left: Table 2, Right: Salutation

Left: Zeus-2000 derailleur set and Criterium derailleur set
Right: Gran Sport derailleur set and the other Gran Sport derailleur set for front single model.

I had seen a real model of Zeus-2000 and Criterium in past. But I didn't know the model Gran sport. It might have been popular edition because front and rear derailleur was made by steel press.

Left: Sift lever and several small parts such as wire lead.
Right: Three kinds of rear derailleur

Fundamental structure of rear derailleur of Gran Sport seems to almost same with Campagnolo Valentino.

Left: Three kinds of front derailleur, Right: Zeus-2000 Chain-wheel

Only the part number of pantagraph is different between Zeus- 2000 and Criterium.
Zeus-2000 seems to be made of aluminium. Chain-wheel of Zeus-2000 was produced based on Criterium: but the weight was cut by titanium parts and several holes.

Left: Criterium chain-wheel, Right: Zeus-2000 BB

The basic structure of Criterium chain-wheel was same as model 2000. PCD of Zeus chain-wheel was exclusive standard; smallest inner gear was 36T. Back in those days, I used to think '36T for road-racing bicycle is strange'. Nowadays it becomes normal because of compact-drive system. Each part of BB seems to be compatible with Campagnolo.

left: Criterium BB, Right: Gran Sport chain-wheel

Left: Zeus-2000 Road-racing pedal and Track-racing pedal. Right: Criterium Road-racing pedal and Track-racing pedal.

Zeus-2000 and Criterium have originality in spite of the basic design based on Campagnolo. The part of ball-bearing of Zeus-2000 looks sealed model.

Left: Gran Sport Zeus Road-racing pedal and Track-racing pedal
Right: Seat post, Seat pin, Holder of spare tire.

The pedal plate of Gran Sport was made of steel. The design was almost same as Campagnolo.
There were two seat posts such as single-bolt model and double-bolt model. Double-bolt model was copy product of Campagnolo. I have just known that single-bolt model was on the lineup.
I had bought a holder for spare tire when I got a first road-racing bicycle. I used to think that this is necessary for a cyclist of round-tire ( we called tubular tire “round tire” )

Left: Saddle and iIflator, Right: Head parts

There were three kinds of saddle, and head parts such as Zeus-2000, Criterium, and Gran Sport were in the lineup. The shape of Zeuse-2000 saddle was similar to Unica and Selle Italia turbo.

Left: Zeus-2000 Centre-pull brake, Right: Zeus-2001 Side-pull brake

The basic design of Zeus-2000 Centre-pull brake was similar to Yoshigai and Weinmann. But cross-sectional shape drew more smooth curve. I had thought that this model was smart in those days. I just noticed that straddle wire was pulley type. The body of side-pull brake was similar to Universal CX.

Left: Zeus-2001 exploded view, Right: Criterium Centre-pull brake

Left: Zeus-2000 hub, Right: Criterium hub

The design of both models was almost same. Zeus-2000 was weight saving model. It was made of light weight material.

Left: Gran Sport Hub, Giant Hub, Right: Track-racing Hub and Cog.

The hub of Giant seems to be a large flange version of Criterium hub as long as I see the small part number.

Left and Right: Quick release levers and hub shafts.

Left and Right: Zeus-2000 Free-wheel and its trait, lineup of sprockets.

The catalog proudly described the weight difference between their product and Regina of 6-speed, and between their product and Shimano of 5-speed.

Left: Fork end and crown, Right: Ball bearing and grease.

Left and Right: tools

I didn't know the tools of Zeus which was same as Campagnolo. How much demand would be there?

Left and Right: Tools

Left: tools, Right: Accessory such as wear

Left and Right: The art gallery that bicycle was theme.

Left: Contents and table 3
