The Catalog of Reminiscence

The Invitation for Cycling by Mr.Gami

Part 21: TOEI in 1978

Here is the catalog of TOEI in 1978. This catalog was distributed at the cycle show this year. Nowadays, the show has developed, and became international show. However, the exhibition of Japanese builder had diminished year by year.
Although the custom bicycle show has been held at Science Technology center in March every year, I feel sorry after all.

At the cycle show in 1978, several bicycles which were unified in monotonous black were exhibited in the TOEI booth. The booth was filling with defiant atmosphere.

This is the front cover.

This is a Randonneur which is the specialty of TOEI. It looks like a French type Randonneur. However, if you observe it closely, you would recognize it is a Japanese Randonneur which has been adjusted to the nature and the roads of Japan, because it has wide gear ratio and wide tires.

I myself also admired Toei and thought I'd like to ride it in a future.

This is a Sportif which was equipped with Campagnolo group-set. It was my first favorite model because the style was intrepid (it was equipped with a well shaped front carrier in spite of side-pull brake model). The origin of my 700c touring bicycle is this model.

You need special knowledge and technology to make tandem bicycle. Only several builders could make it.

There were lots of builder who made road-racing bicycle in those days. People tend to think that Toei is a hobby bicycle. However, as for the shop original brand, there had been several bicycles which were provided by Toei as OEM products.

Note: This means that Toei can be used as a racing bicycle for a competition.

This is the price chart which was provided along with the catalog. Back in those days, it was occasionally printed on Cycle sports magazine and New cycling magazine as an advertisement.

There must have been a number of cyclists who checked optional special works and calculated frame price. I was one of them of course! You might find a lot of checking marks in the chart if you look at it closely.

This was an estimated price for my bicycle. I don't remember if I asked it in the day of cycle show. It was ordinary skeleton and specification.
The top tube was slightly short in comparison with a frame size. Perhaps it was a result which measured my body. I could not order it because of such a high price (78, 000 yen).
