The Catalog of Reminiscence

The Invitation for Cycling by Mr.Gami

Part 78: Suntour in 1990

Here is the catalog of Suntour in 1990.
Suntour got into the critical condition from this year. Though the technology of Suntour was equal to Shimano until 1990, the supply system of Suntour to bicycle maker in the world was much inferior to Simano. And the market share of Suntour had declined year by year. Moreover Suntour had suffered from development delay of electrical front shifting system BEAST for MTB, and burden of expensive license fee.
Next year, Suntour accepted the capital injection from Mori industry.

The combination of "Accu-Shift Plus", "X-Press", "Powering" had an equal function to Shimano. And there was also useful system "Grease-guard". However, the difference of total development ability and supply system between Suntour and Shimano had expanded continually. In a sense, we could say this catalog was the last which introduce the technical peak of Suntour.

The catalog was offered by Mr. D. T

Back in those days, MTB boom had happened in the world. Shimano and Suntour were the major suppliers of the MTB parts in the world.
Table 4 (the back cover) was a system chart between typical group-set.

The catalog was saying "Innovation factory Suntour". Such a word (want to produce art work instead of mass-produced parts) was suitable for Suntour.

The catalog introduced "Accu-Shift" which was produced to compete with Shimano STI (Shimano Total Integration).

1. X-PRESS was the shifter which could change the gear easily by the index system (pushing two levers with a thumb). The competing product was Shimano Rapid-fire.
2. Powering was the chain ring which improved shifting efficiency, and prevented the chain jam. The competing product was Shimano SG.
3. AP-Chain and AP-Cogs improved gear change performance by the combination of chain and sprocket which refined the form. The competing product was Shimano HG.

Back in those day, the new cycling magazine had reported performance of two MTB that each one was equipped with the parts of Suntour and Shimano. In the article, there was no obvious difference between them. These are evaluation: Suntour seemed to regard compatibility and flexibility as important: Shimano was extremely complete as a group-set.

1. "Command" was sold in market earlier than Shimano Dual control lever. It was a simple mechanism which was attached to the side of brake lever, and only moved the seesaw lever. It's popular even now.
2. "AP-Shifter" was a shifting lever. You could select "full index mode" which was a perfect positioning system and "light index mode" which was light click.
3. As for "Multi-Mount", the clamps of brake lever and shifting lever were narrowed to attach them in an easy-to-use position.
4. "Beast" was the gear change system which opened and closed quarter of chain ling by the micro motor like a rail point.

Command shifter was attached near brake lever, could change the gear without lifting a hand from a handlebar. It was simple as product. I myself also had used it. Even now, there are a number of cyclists who use it for touring bicycle, because it doesn't have a complicate mechanism such as Dual control lever of Shimano which is like the black box. Sometime it is put on an online auction, has been bought for high price. Beast was not used for ordinary bicycle because it was expensive and had an exclusive front mechanism. It seemed to be big burden to Suntour because of high cost for the development and the license fee.

SE was a cantilever brake which tightened the shoes strongly along with the direction of rim rotation when you pulled the brake lever. It was often put on an online auction.
Grease-guard was a mechanically simple device. It could inject grease with a grease gun from the outside without dismantling a part.

XC-Pro was the highest grade group-set for MTB. As for the rear hub, two kinds of model were prepared. The one was for the cassette sprocket and the other was for the freewheel. Sprocket was 7 speeds. It was used for the highest grade MTB model of bicycle maker along with Shimano XTR. Front derailleur could shift the gear sharply. Even now, I use it for my Sportif bicycle to ride in forest road.

XC-Comp was a second grade model. It didn't have grease guard. However, the performance was almost equal to XC-Pro. My Araya Muddy Fox was equipped with XC-Comp.

XCD was a middle grade model. X-Press shifter was also prepared for XCD. It was introduced as a group-set which was excellent in cost performance.

The strong point of X-1 was the color coordination by wearing of a color chip. XCE must have been standard parts for mass-production bicycle because there was no price on the catalog.

The products on the page were used for lower grade model of mass-production bicycle.

The group-sets for road-racing bicycle were introduced from here. Helvetia was Swiss team because it was Latin word which showed Switzerland. It was nostalgic that the steel frame was used for Colnago in the photo below.

Superbe Pro was the top grade model of Suntour, was the competing product to Shimano Dura-ace. It has a number of fans even now, has had a good evaluation for precision and endurance of rotation part. Even now, I use the derailleur and the chain wheel and the hub.
There were two kinds of rear hub (cassette and freewheel) as well as XC-Pro. There was 130 mm width rear hub of freewheel type in the lineup. I've used it for my 80s road-racing bicycle.

Sprint was the second grade model. It was used for middle grade model of mass-production road-racing bicycle. It was the same grade as Shimano 600 Ultegra of those days.
There was a binding pedal in the photo. It was OEM product of "Time Equip Criterium". I also have same one. However, there are no more shoes which can attach the cleat of those days.

GPX was third grade model. I hadn't seen real one.

These were a group-sets for regular price. Most of them seemed to be for mass-production bicycle.

VX must have been familiar as succeeding model of V-Luxe of 1970s.
Supperbe Pro on the right side was the group-set for track-racer. It was famous products which supported 10 times victory of Mr. Koji Nakano at the World bicycle championship pro-sprint along with the crimson color frame of Nagasawa.
