The Invitation for Cycling by Mr.Gami

Part 29: Sugino Engineering in 1973

Here is the catalog of Sugino in 1973. The way written by Katakana comes nicely rather than writing with Chinese character. Present company name is Sugino techno. Cospea, Qualite, and XD2 are known well in the market as products of Sugino.
Though Sugino had announced a group-set Sugino 75 series in 1980s, the company is basically a maker specializing in crank. A number of cyclists must have used Mighty-competition, Pro-dynamic, Mighty-tour.
Nowadays, the compact-drive has been in a boom in the field of road racing, and its PCD 110 mm standard originated to Mighty-tour. And present PCD 74 mm of inner ring of Road-triple was also introduced with a MTB crank AT in 1983. I think the design concept of Sugino has been firmly succeeded in such sense even now.
The previous president Mr. Yasushi Sugino had contributed a number of traveler's journals to New cycling magazine. He wrote about parts maker, frame builder, bicycle show, scenery of cycling, competition, and so on as a topic. I used to enjoy reading them.
I hope that Sugino continue to introduce new conception as a maker specializing in chain-wheel.

This is the front cover. Mighty-victory which was the highest grade of road-racing crank of those days decorated the cover.

The series of Mighty- competition was the highest grade of chain-wheel of road-racing model. The sizes of each part were compatible with Campagnolo. Massive and powerful five arms were characteristic.
Mighty-custom was a type which didn't have a groove on the backside, but was equipped with a lightweight chain-ring which had several holes. Back in those days, the lightweight process was begun by Eddy Merckx who was a famous professional road racing athlete, and it had affected parts makers.
The fact which had won two gold medals at Munich Olympic was written proudly on the page.

Mighty-tour and Dynamic-professional were introduced in this page as a highest grade chain-wheel. A number of cyclists used to call it "Pro-dai". But its formal name was Dynamic-professional.
Mighty-tour was a touring model of Mighty-competition which was PCD 110 mm standard. Its minimum inner gear was 34T.
"Pro-dai" was a five pins crank which was compatible with TA and Storonglight 49D. I also used the combination of Pro-dai cranks and TA gear ring.
There was a special adjustor for using minimum 28T inner ring. However, the shape of chain-wheel became messy because there were lots of bolt and nut.
By the way, there was another special adjustor for PCD 144mm. You could attach the gear ring of Mighty-competition through it. We used to call it "Pro-dai-compe". But I thought it was not formal name.

This is Maxy which was used for a number of mass-production touring bicycles of the world. The three-arms and the crank were combined together by a swage. A lot of cyclists must have begun cycling with a sports bicycle which was equipped with this chain-wheel. I was the one of them.
There were various combination with crank, ring , and material.

Mighty-victory and New Maxy were introduced in this page as new products.
Mighty-victory was similar to Mighty-custom. However, the gear ring of Mighty-victory was a product which was cut from the 5 mm thick plate and improved its strength.
New-maxy was a reasonable model of Mighty-tour. It had same standard of Mighty-tour, had been used for a number of mass-production bicycles.

Here are tools, BB parts, and size table.
BB extractor and hanger spanner must have been the first tools for beginner cyclist who became interesting in the mechanism.
Nowadays, "cotter-less" or "cottered" are almost dead words. How many cyclists know this word?

This is the large image of the size table. Mighty and Pro-dai were on the left side, and Maxy was on the right side.
