The Catalog of Reminiscence

The Invitation for Cycling by Mr.Gami

Part 51: Simplex in 1965

Here is the catalog of Simplex in 1965. The varieties of product were fewer than the catalog in 1978. However, the fundamental mechanism was almost same.
The parts name was no longer product number. Each product had a specific name such as Prestige, Criterium, and Cadet. The fork end and the quick shaft were the previous generations which were familiar to vintage bicycle fan.
I'm sorry about the quality of images because those were copied from copies.

The catalog was offered by Mr. K. H.

The catalog must have been issued in the October 1965 because of the word "Catalogue 195 10-65" in the front page.

This is Criterium. Although the sifting lever in the illustration looked like Prestige, the model number was different. Front derailleur was same, too.

This was Prestige. The upper and lower parts of the spring were covered by white casing.

This is the single pulley model Cadet. I had heard that the tension of single pulley model was weak; you had to be careful when you start the pedaling. I haven't used it in the past.
The illustration of the bottom side explained: how to attach the small parts; and recommendation location of weld of the small parts.

These are two kinds of the double chain-ring, and the chain tension device. Competition was used for three-arm crank. Tourist was used for five pins crank. The minimum gear of Competition was 45T, Tourist was 28T.
I had used both models. As for Competition, I had tried to attach it to Stronglight steel cottered-crank. However, I had to remove it soon because it was not usable.

These were several products other than derailleur. There must have been a number of cyclists who had used seat pin, quick shaft, and straight fork end.
As for the fork end of road racing bicycle, The form of the left side was unique. The quick shaft was so-called vertical type.

These two documents didn't belong to the catalog, showed the exploded views of the front derailleur and the sifting lever. The sifting lever seems the white Delrin type.

This derailleur set was not same as the model in 1965. It must have been late model. Each of the parts was familiar to me. I used them regularly. You may remember this derailleur if I say it had red plastic cap on the upper and lower pivot bolt.

I think this rear derailleur was announced in the early 70s and had been sold together with pantograph type front derailleur as a set which was named "Super Competition". I often call it "Sa-n-pu-re-ku-ri-te".
