Part 2: Katakura Silk-Camping and Perfect-Quick




Here is the catalog of Silk Camping and Perfect-quick. "Sil-can" was a popular model for long range camping tour along with Bridgestone Diamond-Camping. Perfect-Quick was a typical model of Rinko bicycle which was made by mass-production maker.

Models in 1974

SC15-4: 69,300 yen Total weight was 17 kg. The frame was lug-less type. It was made of high-tension steel; only the fork was made of Cr-Mo. It was equipped with the guidonnet levers and "JOS" type tail light. The chain-wheel was a newer model Sakae Custom 3. The waterproof flashlight was simplicity and fortitude.


PR10-4: 58,000

Total weight was 13 kg. The frame was lug-less type. It was made of High-tension steel; only the fork was made of Cr-Mo. Separate type rear fender which was fixed by a spring. The structure of the original head set were characteristic. You might recognize an effect of Alps Quick-Ace from the flash light which was attached on the front fork.

Models in 1975

SC15-5 79,500 yen
Total weight was 16.7 kg. The chain-wheel was changed with Sugino Maxi II. The bottle was changed to Tokyo aluminum bottle from Sugino plastic bottle. As for the water proof flashlight, only the color was changed.


PR10-5D: 77,200 yen
Total weight was 13 kg. The photo was Deluxe model. The frame was made of Cr-Mo. It was upgraded with quick release hubs and Sugino chain-wheel Maxi II which you could change an outer sprocket.

Models in 1976

SC15-R: 85,000 yen
Total weight was 16.5 kg. The chain-wheel was changed to Sugino New-Maxi 5 arm. The bottle was changed to Maruichi aluminum bottle from Tokyo aluminum bottle. The flashlight and the holder were also changed with new types.


PR10-DR: 77,200 yen
Total weight was 13 kg. The photo was deluxe type. It was equipped with Sugino New-Maxi 5 arm, Sakae seat-post Custom P-3, and the tubing front carrier. Moreover, the rear derailleur was changed to Suntour V-T from Suntour V-GT.

Models in 1977

SC15-K: 95,000 yen
Total weight was 16.8 kg (560 mm). The frame was changed drastically, and two sizes (533 mm, 560 mm) were prepared. If you observe the catalog closely, you would notice that the crow seat stays were attached more ahead. The flashlight and the dynamo head were attached to opposite side. The front derailleur was changed to Suntour Seven from Suntour SL.
The widths of hub were 96 mm for the front and 127 mm for the rear (back in those days, hubs for five speeds model weren't standardized as 100 mm *120 mm yet. There were other sizes such as 122 mm or 124 mm).


PR10-DK: 83,000 yen
Total weight was 12.7 kg (550 mm). The name of Deluxe was changed to Randonneur DX (The name of Standard was still Perfect Quick). The frame was changed, too. Shimano forge straight-end was used to it. The most impressive thing was that Silk original head was changed with normal micro adjuster. Parts weren't changed so much. Only the guard stays was changed to the round-stay type from the pine-needle type, and the tail light was changed with reflector.

Models in 1979

SC15-W: 96,800
Total weight was 16.8 kg (550 mm). At this year, there weren't so many changes. Only the dynamo cable run inside of the frame tubes and the crank was changed to Super Maxi from New Maxi. The gear ratio hadn't changed since the crank became 5 arms type; front was 48-44-34T, rear was 15-17-20-23-26T.


PR10-DW: 83,000 yen
Total weight was 12.7 kg (550 mm). The dynamo cables ran inside of the frame tube. The crank was changed to Super Maxi from New Maxi as well. The gear ratio was front 48-34T, rear 14-16-19-22-26T.

Models in 1981

SC15-DS: 135,000
Total weight was 19.6 kg (550 mm). The model was upgraded drastically. The frame was made of Cr-Mo, and became lugs type. Several kinds of direct-attached frame works were done. The brake lever was changed to hooded lever from guidonnet lever. The derailleur set was also changed with Suntour VX.


PR10-DW: 104,000 yen
Total weight was 12.6 kg (550 mm). The frame was still lug-less type. However, several kinds of direct-attached frame works were done. The curve of front fork became more beautiful. The cranks were changed with Pro-dynamic 6.





If you line the catalogs up and observe it closely, you would notice that there had been a lot of changes. And prices suddenly went up in 1981. I don't know the detail since I don't have a catalog in 1980. Camping model and Randonneur model had disappeared from the catalog now. However, back in those days, those models were necessary in the line-up of high grade bicycle of mass-production maker, not only Silk.
