The Catalog of Reminiscence

The Invitation for Cycling by Mr.Gami

Part 13: Shimano in 1976

Here is the catalog of Shimano in 1976.
Shimano which announced Dura-ace in 1973 had already built up the lineup from the conception of group-set. Shimano introduced new group-set 600 in this catalog as a inferior model of Dura-ace. 600 series was a former model of Ultegra. The hub of 600 series became the bestseller in the market for touring bicycle in those days.
The catalog also introduced Dura-ace 10 as the exclusive group-set for track-racing bicycle. Shimano tried to lighten the group-set by shortening the chain pitch from 12.7 mm to 10.0 mm. Though there was a rumor that road model would be announced, it ended up as a track model.

Shimano had begun to sponsor European professional team Shimano Flandria as soon as they announced Dura-ace in 1973. Dura-ace had been improved by knowhow which came from professional road racing. Shimano had released the new model Dura-ace EX in 1978, and introduced new technology such as cassette free, Uniglide, and double-cut.

This catalog was a handy size, was provided at a specialty shop for free.

On the emblem of each group-set, a photograph of John Nicholson who became the world champion of the sprint in 1975 was arranged.

Note: Japanese call a group-set as "component parts".

Red and white jersey which must have been familiar to senior fan of road racing was an uniform of Shimano Flandria team. Ace was Belgian Freddy Maertens of course. In the 1973 World bicycle championship, he was ranked next to Felice Gimondi who rode Bianchi, and finished 2nd. The photograph that Freddy grabbed the brake lever at the goal was famous. It meant that he should have been a winner. There were various stories about this fact. For example, "Freddy wanted Merckx who was also Belgian to win" or "Campagnolo didnf't want Shimano to win at the World championship" and the like.

This is the exclusive group-set Dura-ace 10 for track-racing bicycle which had 10 mm pitch chain as a core part. The catalog was explaining that the weight was cut 40 per cent from the conventional standard.

On the lower right, you can see a photo of derailleur and chain-wheel for road racing bicycle. Though I looked forward to the sale, it wasn't sold in the market after all. This is the track-racing parts of normal pitch. Chain wasn't added to the group-set yet.

This is the normal pitch parts for track-racer. Chain didnft add to the group-set yet.

This is Dura-ace for road-racing bicycle which was the core of the catalog. There was not great change from the announcement of 1973; only the plastic bushing was inserted in the top and the bottom bolt of the rear derailleur (it was still Crane). PCD of the Chain wheel was 130 mm. It was Shimano original standard which could use 39T. Nowadays, it became a standard.
Eyelet on the end parts and star shaped hole of inflator holder were nostalgic. By the way, I still have the chain-wheel 49* 39T and the inflator holder.

The catchphrase is really the taste of 70s.
Note: "now, new group-set Shimano 600 appeared for the wild and the fierce speed."

Touring group-set 600 was introduced from this page. The model's hair style , clothes, and the 27 inch sportif bicycle which was equipped with a front bag and a Rinko bag were ordinary touring style of those days. There must have been a number of young cyclists who had a trip with such style. I was one of them. Until now, I've ridden a bicycle with this style because an atmosphere of those days have been in my mind. I really love the touring bicycle style which is equipped with a front bag and fenders.

Though Shimano announced that model 600 was a group-set for touring bicycle, the catalog introduced it as a group-set for road-racing bicycle. I can say the side pull brake was for road-racing bicycle. But how was the chain-wheelc?

Model 600 ended up in short life because of its unrefined design.
Large quantity of the hubs and the derailleur were used for middle class mass-production bicycle. Especially the hub was often used for semi-custom-made bicycle and shop original brand bicycle.
I had used it for my road-racing bicycle and randonneur bicycle, and broke the hub shaft several times.

Here is the group-set for touring bicycle. The GS rear derailleur which had long cage, the front derailleur, and the cantilever brakes were prepared.
The function of cantilever brake was not enough. Therefore we usually exchanged the brake shoe for Mafac. Or if we had enough money, we used to exchange the brake itself for Criterium. It might be beyond the image of young cyclists. Now I myself can't imagine, too.
