The Invitation for Cycling by Mr.Gami

Part 89: Sanshin Matsumoto in 1981

Here is the English catalog of Sanshin Matsumoto in 1981. We could say that Sanshin Matsumoto factory was a specialized maker for the hub of sports bicycle. It must be familiar to the cyclists who belong to my generation. The products of Sanshin were used for a lot of mass-production sports bicycles; "Pro-AM and Professional" which were high grade models were used for custom made bicycle. The hub of Suntour Superbe which was announced in 1979 was provided by Sanshin Matsumoto. The ball bearing of Pro-AM and Professional was so smooth. Precision and finishing work of both models were very good.
I myself had used "Gyro-master and Pro-Am" which were introduced in this catalog.

Note: "Sanshin" was the company name and "Sunshine" was the brand of Sanshin Matsumoto.

Here is the front cover. The background all in deep blue is simple and the design of the logo of Sunshine is familiar.

This was the highest grade model Professional racing hub.
Large flange model, small flange model, and sealed bearing model which became popular in those days were prepared. There were three kinds of spoke-hole such as 28H, 32H, and 36H. The widths of hub were 100 mm (front) and 120/ 126 mm (rear). Those were standard size of those days.
The cold-forged hub shell which was polished by jewel-buffing, the precision grinding for ball-races, and Cr-Mo hub shaft were really suitable to the name of the highest grade model.
Only a small flange model was equipped with the sealed bearing. Though it was called sealed bearing, the mechanism was Cup and Cone type, and it was equipped with built-in Radial ball bearings.

This is Professional for track-racing model. Small flange and large flange were prepared. There were three kinds of spoke-hole such as 28H, 32H, and 36H. The widths of hub were 100 mm (front) and 110/ 120 mm (rear).
The material, the finishing work, and the precision grinding for ball-races were same as the racing hub.

There are Pro-AM and Gyro-master.
Pro-AM was announced earlier than Professional. Beautiful Alumite coating (anodic oxide coatings), and five holes for weight saving was trait of exterior. Ball-race was polished. However, the quality must have been inferior to Professional.
Gyro-master was a middle grade model, equal to Shimano 600 of those days.
The number of spoke hole was 36H. Front hub had two widths such as 96 mm and 100 mm.

These are regular models.
Though the body was made by cold-forge; the finishing work of surface was omitted. The ball-race was not polished.
There was a lock nut model other than Quick release model.
The width of the semi-large flange model and the small flange model were 93 mm (front) and 124 mm (rear).

These are regular models, too. Two models of above were made of aluminum. However, those were not cold-forging, but casting.
Two models of below were made of steel. As for the rear hub of small type which was made of the steel model, the spoke holes of freewheel side were the hooking style.

The specification table of BMX hub and of other hubs more than middle class model was printed in this page.
The rear hub shaft of BMX was made of high-carbon steel so that it could endure in rough condition. Customer could order the color of anodic oxide coatings such as red, gold, black, and blue.

Here is the back cover.
Head office was in the Sanshin building which was located at Yuuraku-cho Chiyoda-ward Tokyo. The factory was at Matsumoto city Nagano prefecture. The name of Sanshin Matsumoto must have come from the address of factory.
Sanshin building which conserved the figure of built in 1929 was demolished in 2007 because it was becoming too old. Nowadays, most of domestic bicycle parts industry, especially the makers which had made sports bicycle parts closed the business. Back in those days, high quality parts which were made in Japan were still exported to the world. It's too difficult to imagine it from the present condition of domestic bicycle industry.
