The Catalog of Reminiscence

The Invitation for Cycling by Mr.Gami

Part 7: Miyata Eddy Merckx in 1973

Eddy Merckx was announced by Miyata industry in the September of 1973. Eddy Merckx was known as the greatest Road-racing athlete and it was his golden era. I used to eagerly read the article "Eddy Merckx, his life and his race and his bicycle" which was written by Mr. Tsutomu Numa in New cycling magazine.

By the way, there were a number of articles about the road bicycle racing or athletes of Europe or mechanism of racing bicycle in New cycling magazine. I used to collect a lot of information from the magazine.

In the catalog, there was a road-racer which was equipped with Shimano Dura-Ace group-set which was announced in those days. From the point of present view, the lengths of each part of the frame were a little long. It may be a taste of old time. However, the Road-racer with "Merckx orange" was a longing bicycle in those days.
I think it was sold in the market before its time, because only the veteran cyclists knew about Eddy Merckx and his glory in Japan.

Catalog was offered by Mr.Masayuki

Here is the front cover. The catalog was saying that "The world excellent bicycle Eddy Merckx; Unprecedented 280 victories in competitions; Eddy Merckx who is the fastest man in the world".

In the lineup of Eddy Merckx series, there were fast-riding model, randonneur, rinko-model and camping model other than road-racing model. The combination of Eddy Merckx and camping bicycle was strange.

I'm sorry because the Italian-cut lugs were too thick. The model would be upgraded two years later, and would become the professional European road-racer somehow.

Large hub was popular in those days. Was the tire Soyo #90?

The brake wire and the shift lever which were fixed by a band, the pomp peg was popular for road-racing bicycle of those days. The outer band (brake wire guide) of Dura-ace was a highly wrought product more than Dia-compe; it looked luxurious. I still have them.

The two models of the left side were the fast-riding bicycles. There were catchphrase such as "High-tension steel frame for fast-riding" for MX-27DX-A, "Super high speed model 27 which is same as racing model" for MX-27SDX-A.
MX-10P-A was a Rinko model. It was not a type which was extracting a front fork. And the front carrier was a folding type.

There were other kinds of model in the lineup as the brand of Eddy Merckx, such as track-racing model, camping model, and cycle football model. I could feel an enthusiasm of Miyata of those days. However, it must have been put on the market before its time.
