The Catalog of Reminiscence

The Invitation for Cycling by Mr.Gami

Part 56: Everest in 1950s

Here is the catalog of Everest which was issued around late 1950s. It was two centerfolds, very simple. However, the content of it was precious.

Everest was the brand name of Tsuchiya industry which continued from prewar. And it was famous in the part of competition bicycle. In the advertisements of a magazine which was issued by the time I started cycling (early 1970s), the brand name was written as "Everest" in Japanese. However, it was described as "Evarest" in this catalog. To senior cyclists more than me, the name of "Evarest" might be more familiar than "Everest".

The catalog introduced four kinds of bicycle with photos. One of them was a racing model. The others were "Tourists" which were called as "Touring model" during the first cycling boom around late 1950s.

I could not identify about the publication year of the catalog. However, I supposed that the catalog was issued around late 50s because of several cues below.

1. There were two digits of area code in the telephone number.
2. The copy "to have picnic or travel with bicycle became popular recently" suggests first cycling boom.
3. The specification of bicycles in the catalog.

Please send me a mail if you have some information of the catalog.

Note: The area cord of Tokyo city was changed from two digits to three digits in February 1960.

Catalog was offered by Mr.Old Cyclist

These were Lady Tourist and Tandem Tourist. Both were touring models. The copy 'Let's ride smart Evarest for exercise and commuting' was nostalgic. In old catalogs, we often find the word 'Gou' as a title right after the model name (Everest Gou).

Note: In the past, Japanese tend to put Chinese character "Gou" after the name of vehicle such as 'Apollo 11 Gou'.

Everest Racer and Tourist-deluxe were introduced in this page. Tourist-deluxe was produced for men, was so-called Club model.
There was a word "Meas" type for handlebar. It must have been "Moustache bar".
The derailleur in the catalog was an external 3-speed type. However, customer seemed to be able to select an internal 3-speed type.
Of course the racer must have been the model that Tsuchiya was good at most.
The logo of the right upper was unknown for me. On recentry, I saw the real one on this bicycle.
