The Catalog of Reminiscence

The Invitation for Cycling by Mr.Gami

Part 88: Konno Factory (Cherubim) in 1980

Konno Factory was established by Mr. Hitoshi Konno in 1965. His bicycle had been used at Mexico Olympic in 1968. Now his son Mr. Shinich Konno became a frame builder. He occasionally exhibit his works at custom bicycle shows and came to be well known as a major custom bicycle factory in Japan. The catalog at here was published around 1980.

The catalog was offered by Mr. T

In the normal condition, the catalog is folded in B5 size. This image is the front and back cover. The frame on the front cover is a present road-frame R-2.

This is the sample of R2 complete bicycle. It was equipped with Shimano Dura-ace EX of those days.

The catalog was explaining about the frame through three pages.

Touring and V were introduced in the first page. Touring had four types such as high-tension lug-less frame, Cr-Mo lug frame, lug frame with built-in cable (Super touring), and Nervex lug frame (Super touring). V had two types such as side-pulled brake model and Mafac center-pulled brake model.

R-2 road-racing frame, Ladies touring frame, track-racing frame, and junior road frame were introduced in the second page. R-2 has been produced continuously until now with repeating model change.

Third page was explaining about the several frame works and the color sample.
"Straight-drop frame end" which could be used for all kinds of derailleur, shifting cable guide under BB shell, original "lost-wax casting" fork crown which was made of Cr-Mo, and outer cable guide. Those small items which were designed uniquely were trait of the frame work.

This is the order sheet. I had had interest in Cherubim in 1970s. However, I had to give it up because custom frame wasn't advertised formally in those days, and there was no frame which was suitable for my body.

This is the 4 pages guide book for frame order. It explains how you make an upper order form.

The head mark was printed on the back cover. The simple C mark must have been nostalgic to senior cyclists.

Mr. Konno had been one of regular visitor at the frame builder meeting of New cycling magazine. I was impressed for his logical explanation about the fact he always thought about productivity though he explained about the necessity and strong point of the hand work.
