The Catalog of Reminiscence

The Invitation for Cycling by Mr.Gami

Part 12: Alps in 1960s

Here is the 1960s catalog of Alps which has been familiar to anyone. Green-cap, Clubman-ace, Road king, Road-ace, Rover were introduced in the catalog. The famous Quick-ace seemed not announced yet. The shop which had kept the lineup with a focus on travel bicycle until now had been precious for randonneur fan.

The catalog was offered by Mr. Delinquent middle age.

This is the front cover. The background is Alps?

The catalog explained that "Green-cap" and "Green-cap super" were general touring-bicycles. And Clubman-ace was a touring-bicycle which had high function. All bicycles were equipped with fender which was fixed by "pine-needle stay", and had a flap on the front fender. Those models seemed to be developed from traditional club-model.
In this page, only the frame of Clubman-ace was made of Cr-Mo. The price was 47, 000 yen.

These are speed models. As for Road-king, two kinds of model such as the high-tension steel general model and the Cr-Mo deluxe model were prepared. Road-ace was the highest model which was composed of Nervex lugs, Campagnolo, and Universal.

Half plating (chromium) of the forks, bottle cage on a handlebar, and leather saddle were typical style of road-racing bicycle of 1960s. The weight of the models was around 12.0 kg. In comparison with these models, present road bicycle is very light.

These are the daily sports bicycle and the Rover.
Rover has a long history as a camping bicycle. In comparison with bicycle in the present catalog, the reinforcement work (which can be used as a grip also) of the upper side of the BB shell, the crossed seat stays, and the attachment form of the headlight are same as this photo.
I think this bicycle was a typical model of Alps which had long history and tradition.

There must have been a number of tourists who had ridden Rover in the domestic land or oversea.
